I never learned how to do it the way I was supposed to. The breathing did it to me - I would breathe in while in the water. My department head is a swimmer, and has entered all sorts of competitions (he's approaching 60) and I love hearing him talk about his wonderful trainers. I never realized how much technique is involved.
