Foot-Long Memories?

Me: I have brown rice.

My mother: I grew up eating white rice. You have a taste for what you grew up with...
What my mother said got me thinking. I really don't have anything that I crave from childhood probably because the kitchen table was the site where I tapped into my stubbornness when people tried to make me eat things that I did not want to eat.

I still have temperature, texture and visual issues to this day. Maybe I just have issues; I feel like that deserves and LOL and, yet, I'm hesitant to insert one.

I do have McDonald's memories and macaroni and cheese (my aunt's) memories. Candy corn, without fail, makes me think of my paternal grandfather which is funny because he used to grow greens and watermelons and whatnot but I associate him with a Halloween treat that he often purchased for the occasion...

This billboard has been up forever in my neighborhood. When I see it, I think, finally, truth in advertising.

Did you catch this Nightline segment about foot-long hamburgers?

Is there something food that you crave from childhood?

22,000 Subways

So what does this economy taste like? caught my attention and I found myself watching Nightline on Thursday.

I've heard that McDonald's (Recession Diet) is doing banner business during this economy and it looks like Subway, with some 22,000 strong franchises, is not far behind.

The journalist believes that the advertising campaign and the store's ability to use small storefronts is significant to their success. Subway's C.E.O. also credits Jared Fogle's phenomenal weight loss story as a Subway success factor.

On the advertisement front, Subway does have some clever ads as does McDonald's.

I've seen this ad in Shape magazine several times and it always moves me. McDonald's got rid of its supersize fries after Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me hit theatres but the supersize concept is a hard one to shake.

Jared showed off his fat pants in the interview. I have my own version -- some black Ralph Lauren pants that I plan to keep. Those pants were a sweet find at $20 dollars but I want to keep them as reminder of how I arrived at plus-size in the first place. As I've been advised, I will get rid of the remainder of my ill-fitting clothing because I don't want to it to be convenient for me to wear my larger clothes again.

Supersize

I was looking for something to watch on Hulu and came across this Jay Leno segment, 2008: A Look Back. I really like the McDonald's and Nike spoofs.

I don't know if it's true but Leno said that as a McDonald's spokesperson, Phelps was entitled to free food for life.

Check out Phelps on McDonald's.

Does A Pickle Count?

I didn't do very well with vegetables today so I'm wondering if the pickle that I had on my turkey sandwich counts.

I did manage to get in quite a bit of fruit: a banana, kiwifruit, strawberries and pineapple.

I went to the gym today and took on the AMT. I had way more energy than I had yesterday. I watched Celebrity Fit Club 3 and the evening news while I bounced and strode.

The news had a segment about simple pleasures during these tough, economic times. People are still treating themselves to things like lipstick, movies, McDonald's (revenue up 8%) and small pieces of Godiva chocolate. I was thinking about my simple pleasures. I'm definitely going to say that kiwifruit, pineapple and Kashi TLC (Tasty Little Cereal Bars) Baked Apple Spice are on my top ten list.

In the good news segment, a viewer reported that the Eugene, Oregon YMCA is offering a free, three-month membership to people who have been laid off.
