Clear Your Mind And Your ... Will Follow

After yoga I wanted to, as Cindy advised in class, let it go with an encore of inhaling, raising my arms, swan diving and exhaling. Also, I could not stop singing after class...

When I got to the studio, it was not crowded and the class never filled up. There ended up being twelve of us. The possibility of a wintry mix probably kept people at home. It's totally nice to have an uncrowded class and to have an unobstructed view of yourself in the mirror. Wait, did I just write that???

Cindy was on a roll tonight and her oft-repeated mantra was clear your mind. She told us to stop thinking about work, to stop thinking about other things that might be bugging us and she said my favorite Cindyism: don't let your mind write little stories.

She also reminded us to activate our palms in mountain, to use our breath as a barometer and if we couldn't breathe while in a pose that meant that we were trying too hard which didn't mean that she didn't push us.

During the first round, we were testing the water. This time, we're diving in....I saw where you were at the first time...go deeper...
As she gave instructions for cobra, she told us that we could pretend to be a mermaid or a cobra -- whatever worked for us...You had to be there but it was funny when she said it.

And speaking of instructions, Cindy is great at giving them. I was able to hold my plank much longer because I listened to her instructions -- table top, fingers splayed out, no swayed back etc. etc. I also felt more solid in triangle pose...Cindy had us cracking up when she told us that we could practice the plank at home. At the 80 minute point in class, no one wants to hear any p words...

Here's something that you might not know about me: I break into song if I hear a line that reminds me of one. Ask me "When will I see you...?" and I'll start singing The Supremes. So, when Cindy reminded us gaze on the forehead in the mirror -- it was enough to make me think about this song:

Now, if I can just wind down -- that would be good...

The Kinks Worked Themselves Out

I had plans to go swimming but just looking at the snow on the ground made me shiver. Don't believe the hype about those indoor pools being heated.

The snow made me wonder if I should stay at home or go.

I hit the gym around 7:20 or so and decided to hop on the StairMaster which is not the most logical choice after you've done back-to-back days of rock climbing. My hip flexors protested but the kinks worked themselves out after about five minutes.

My goal was 45 minutes and whenever I have a StairMaster goal like that, I hone in on this yellow poster directly in my line of vision:

Ask Us How To Enhance Your Goals
I focus on that poster the way I pick an item to focus on when I'm doing the tree pose. I like how this cross-training thing works.

But even with my focus, I started to buckle with about 13 minutes left. I have a new MP3 player and it has a Go List, a very appropriate title methinks.

A few songs on my go list:
Bad, Michael Jackson
Super Bad, James Brown
World, Hold On
, Bob Sinclair
By this time, I'm telling myself all manner of things. I'm bad, hold on. Yadda Yadda Yaddda.

My car was pretty much clear of snow when I went into the gym and here's what it accumulated while I was working out.

And here's a little video that I took at the world's longest stoplight.

My stats:

490 calories, allegedly burned
180 floors, allegedly climbed
Level 7, Highest (Average 5)
Total Time, 60 minutes

No wonder I popped my head as I was getting into my car.

Beats Per Minute

There's nothing quite as disappointing as getting ready to exercise and your MP3 player won't turn on even though the battery symbol is indicating that there should be enough juice for many songs to play.

There have been several articles published lately to verify that music does help you through your workout and, as long as it's music that you enjoy, the tempo doesn't matter.

Personally, I like up-tempo music when fatigue sets in and I'm trying to get over the workout hump.

Here are the beats per minute for some of my favorite "gut it out" songs.

  • 125 BPM: Billie Jean, Michael Jackson

  • 134 BPM: Easy Lover, Philip Bailey & Phil Collins

  • 130 BPM: Flashlight, Parliament Funkadelic

  • 119 BPM: I'm Every Woman, Chaka Khan

  • 120 BPM: It's A New Day, will.i.am

  • 124 BPM: Miss Me Blind, Culture Club

  • 120 BPM: Now That We Found Love, Heavy D & The Boys

  • 123 BPM: Please Don't Stop The Music, Rihanna

  • 115 BPM: Say, Say, Say, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney

  • 145 BPM: Sweet Dreams, Eurythmics

  • Of course, if the music does stop playing, I exercise unplugged...
