Unfurl Your Brows or The Gospel According to Madonna

Madonna

  • The more you do yoga, the more your body opens up...

  • The body has trade-offs for everything...

  • Yoga is all about releasing energy...because it gets blocked.

  • I loathe hot yoga.

Madonna to me after I told her what I originally used my yoga towel for...

  • Loosen up that synovial fluid...

    One of Madonna's favorite fluids...

  • I tell people that I can't wait until the next day because I'll be even more beautiful then. If I don't say it, who will?

  • We need to move our bodies...,

(As we moved a leg back and forth while it was suspended from a strap on the yoga wall)

  • You all look gorgeous... Madonna to the class as we were in Warrior I

  • We all have our reasons that we are drawn to yoga...

  • You can put your legs up on the wall at home...You can breathe, can't you? Re: the importance of having a home practice.

  • Don't get uneven on me...

  • Let go...unfurl your brows... At the start of savasana

  • The first time that I experienced restorative yoga was with Madonna and it was amazing. Haven't been able to go a Madonna led class in a while but I still remember the lessons and the laughter. Thanks Madonna...

The Gospel According to Pure Yoga

Gloria a.k.a. Pure Yoga has a peaceful aura about her but, at the end of class, her face is even more serene as she gives a four-Namaste salute -- nodding to every area of the classroom...Yoga practice was a struggle as my hamstrings and just about everything else screamed at me but I don't regret rolling out my mat and can't wait to do it again...

  • May all beings be happy and free...Shanti. (Pure Yoga's usual invocation at the start of class.)

  • Make the pose comfortable. (Timely advice as I struggled with Downward Facing Dog)

  • Don't compromise the neck...

  • If you have big lats, this (eagle arms) may be a problem.

  • The aerial leg should be...

  • Your mind lives in your body so if you feel...

  • You clear the mind when you rest your eyes. (Gloria had us warm up our hands by rubbing them together then placing them over the eyes.)

  • Spread the chest, sink into the heels... (During Downward Facing Dog)

  • Most people only breathe from their chests. In yoga, you have an opportunity to explore the full capacity of your lungs...

  • Move the breath throughout the body especially during difficult poses. Most people have a tendency to hold their breath when the pose is difficult...

  • Favorite song on yoga playlist right now...

The Golden Opportunity or The Gospel According to My Gentle Yoga Teachers

My Expression of Gate Pose, Modified

    Jaime

  • It's very good to do shoulder shrugs and neck rotations. In China, people do this every day. This area (neck) is the connection between the mind and body and has a lot of nerves it. If this area is tight and tense, a lot of problems can occur.

  • You have a golden opportunity to improve yourself during yoga...

  • Forehead to the Floor................ During Child's Pose

  • Be gentle with the neck...

    Donna

  • This hour is about you and only you.

  • The only person that you should be worried about is you on your mat.

  • It's your practice. Do whatever you wish or wish not to do...

  • In any class that you're in, if you're tired or don't feel like doing a pose, you can go into Child's Pose -- no questions asked; it's a restorative pose.

  • Extend your leg back and curl your toes under for a yummy calf stretch.

  • I don't know of any exercise where you hold your breath except for a breath-holding contest.

  • And now we come to the most important part...savasana.

Not Drinking the Kool-Aid and...More Gospel from Melinda Frances

I got an email alerting me that someone "said" my name on Twitter:

I've pretty much put the kibosh on eating out when someone retires, resigns or gets laid off but, of course, I have felt guilty or felt that I was being too much of a stickler and/or a stick-in-the-mud. I do have restaurants that I will go to including Chipotle (burrito bowl minus the cheese and sour cream), Kaldi's (baked falafel), Local Harvest (veggie burger or egg sandwich with farm fresh eggs) or Sweet Art (Sweet -veggie- Burger or vegan chili).

I've also felt obnoxious when I've asked family and friends about ingredients in a meal when an invitation to dinner has been extended.

It's funny when people feel like they must feed you. My colleagues will bring me strawberries or grapes etc. when there's a function going on at work because, by now, they know that I won't eat the cake or drink the "Kool-Aid..." and, yet, I still get plenty of invitations to dine out. After reading The Wall Street Journal article, I felt like I could exhale...

Hott Southern Mess a.k.a. Melinda no longer works with me but I remembered that I still had more gospel fodder:

  • I'll see you in a tic toc.

  • OH EM GEE...

  • My love for candy is deep and it is real.

  • I need to get my nails done before I lose all of my friends.

  • Paris Hilton always says live every day like it's your birthday.

  • Me: Are you generous with yourself?

Melinda: I'm the most important person in my world. My cat and David are a close tie...

  • When I was little, I had a cat named Princess Kitten because I was imaginative like that...

  • BRB...

  • I'm so over being an adult.

  • We could be a Blondetourage.

I Like the Way He Killed Him or The Gospel According to My Aunt Al (Second Edition)

This coffee mug pretty much mirrors how I feel. No matter how many self-care activities I've engaged in, I've pretty much lost my patience and a whole lot of goodwill by Friday. I was going for my calm-the-nerves Friday afternoon coffee when the mug slipped out of my hand. One of my friends gave it to me a long time ago. I'm gonna try not to think about broken things and, instead, think about how my aunt amuses me...

  • The problem with having kids when you're young is that they grow old with you.

  • You've got a problem; You need to stay out of those stores.

My aunt to my cousin who loves to shop.

  • My cousin: I have two pairs of brown boots. I need some black ones.

My aunt: You'll probably get them soon. (To me) She doesn't have too many wants.

  • The store ain't no joke. You wanna get broke; go into the grocery store.

  • Deals ain't got shit that's a dollar anymore.

  • I'm not eating that; it's for fat people.

After quitting beer, my aunt starting hitting the Neapolitan ice cream hard so I bought her some reduced fat ice cream but she didn't quite go for it...

  • They're not meant to last forever.

To me after saying that I don't plan on buying another car for a very, very long time.

  • When Leatha gets concerned, everyone should be concerned.

My aunt re: her sister who is usually unshakable.

  • I've been taking care of me for a long time.

Re: my cousin's offer to handle things if my aunt runs into problems post-retirement.

  • If she says that she has four, that means she has more.

My Aunt Al after my cousin window shopped for another reversible leather jacket.

  • Boy, she's wearing that bed out.

My aunt on Carrie after Mr. Big leaves her at the altar in the Sex in the City movie.

  • I liked the way he killed him.

After Robert De Niro's character assassinated William Fichtner's in Heat

I Need Some Fake Exercises or (More) Gospel from Hazira, A Special Friday Night Birthday Edition

  • How do I take care of these (thighs)?

I'm not doing anything that hurts.

    I need some fake exercises.

  • That's so Bosnian...

  • You'll be talking to your organs soon.

Hazira to me re: my increasing interest in acupressure et al.

  • The heart sends out the strongest waves...

  • I'm telling you; it's all about balance.*

  • I wouldn't wish someone's mother dying in another country on my worst enemy.

  • Something is going to please you.

After I put my coat on backwards...

  • I am so impressed with those people who never give up.

    Commentary while watching Conviction.

  • Rugala Se Ruga Pa Postala Druga.

Rough translation: You become what you laugh at... Hazira made this comment after I told her that I had bought four boxes of Annie's Homegrown Bunnies and almond butter not realizing that I already had reserves at home. I usually chuckle at her impressive food inventory.

  • Please call my soul cell.

    Freudian slip?

  • And the class will have lots of civil people and you like civil people.

Hazira after I told her that I was thinking about taking a Healing Touch class.

Gazing at the Third Eye or The Gospel According to Donna, My Other Yoga Teacher

  • Savasana is a gift that you should give yourself every day.

  • If you're not breathing, you're not doing the practice.

  • Wherever you go, you must breathe.

  • (While we tried to get our fingers to our toes)

  • Heart center open...

  • Let your head hang low -- like a piece of ripe fruit.

  • I don't like to hear the word "ouch."

While we were doing pigeon and curious pigeon.

  • Strong and majestic -- like a mountain...

  • Even though your eyes are closed, you're gazing at your third eye which is right above the bridge of your nose.

  • Your tush should not torque.

    During chair pose

  • Wherever you go, it should feel good. This pose is a restorative position.

Donna on child's pose. She told us that we could put our big toes together or whatever felt good to us...

  • Yoga Girl didn't amuse me as much as Whole Foods Parking Lot but it did amuse...

I'm One of Those People or (More) Gospel According to Melinda Frances

I'm not sure that this post is appropriate now that Melinda has her own blog. Nevertheless, here's the gospel and I hope we all get to do some fun stuff soon.

  • I think I was meant to work in a bar and not an office.

  • People who don’t trust me get on my nerves – especially when I'm bartending.

  • No, William. I'd marry Harry too or Charles... I think I'd make a really good princess.

  • I just need to confirm that it (engagement ring) looks amazing on me.

  • People underestimate my laziness. I don't mind doing stuff as long as it's fun.

  • When I'm in a bad mood, I have no self-control.

  • People can be secretly scary. I'm one of those people.

  • Just because you're on a diet doesn't mean you can't look at the menu.

  • Her vagina (the Duggars mother) is like a water slide.

After my confession that I had watched an episode of 19 Kids and Counting.

  • I was in love with this Turkish guy for one day. I loved him and he loved me.

The Energizer or The Gospel According to My Yoga Teacher

  • Hold the posture but not the breathing.

  • Balance postures are good exercises for the mind.

  • I'm careful about what I put in my mouth and about what comes out of my mouth.

  • ...We only achieve balance in death.

  • It's a good idea to push yourself beyond your comfort zone but not to the point of pain....

  • The more you stretch, the more you relax...

  • Child's pose...good for the spine; good for the legs; good for relaxation.

  • Through the breathing, we energize the entire body.

  • Take a moment to feel the benefits of the practice. Feel the difference in the mind, body and emotions.

    Usually said after savasana...

  • I definitely felt the difference tonight. Since we were a small group, someone wanted to have fun and do Vinsyasa Flow. I don't know if it was fun but I was on point with the breathing.

Steel Cut Oats & Egg Whites or The Gospel According to Chiquita

Chiquita is my cousin and her gospel follows:

  • Dot. Period. The end.

Something that Chiquita will say when she's made a credible argument about something.

  • It's not going to end well because it didn't start well.

Commentary on a situation that was not handled in a nice fashion.

  • We're not going to sit up here and let you die because you don't have insurance.

My cousin to another cousin who was feeling miserable.

  • I went to crêpes: etc. in the Central West End. They have the kind of food that you like.

Me: What kind of food do I like?

Cousin: You know, steel cut oats, egg whites; they have an extensive list of that kind of stuff... (points at me).

  • I love their BLT's; they (Crown Candy) don't have your kind of food there.

  • You know how some people are just kind of off-brand?

  • I do not want to go to work. I say that every time I see you, don't I?

  • Me: Want some (baked Lays)?

    Chiquita: I'd rather have cardboard.

  • I wouldn't mind eating steel cut oats but not when I got out to eat...

  • Do you think that I change purses every time I change outfits? I don't have on anything blue...

Re: my comment that my purse didn't match anything that I had on.

  • You can't hurt my feelings.

Our aunt was in the ICU and this guy, who didn't seem to be waiting on anyone, came in, got on the phone and talked extensively. The nusre had been calling with updates and Chiquita went and asked him to get off the phone. My aunt Al said that the telephone man was going to hurt her feelings...

  • I need to get back in my lane...

Something that Chiquita tends to say when she feels that she's gotten over involved or feels it was something she should have never been involved in from the get-go.

The Gospel According to Patti, (More)

  • I sound so glib but nothing was taken out of context.

  • Patti after reading The Gospel According to Patti

  • A body in motion stays in motion...You know what I mean? I just don't stop.

Re: my disbelief with Patti's route stamina

  • It's all between the ears.

Patti's commentary when you're stuck on a rock. She frequently tells me that I blast past the harder moves while getting stumped by simple stuff.

  • My child is still so trusting. I don't know how she got to be that way living in the house with the two of us.

  • Patti: Just do it.

Me: Isn't that a Nike slogan?

Patti to me while I was perched somewhere in the middle of What's Next?, a 5.9 route

  • "He who hesitates is lost." They don't just say that for no reason...

Patti to me as I was perched on yet another route

  • Trust your feet.

    Patti to me.

  • Me: You're stubborn.

Patti: Ya think? I've been married for almost 30 years and I have three kids that have been to college. You've been climbing with me all this time and don't know that?*

  • There you go being a purist again...

Patti after my commentary on how someone climbed a route.

  • Patti: Our heat went out...Yadda yaddda yadda....(Climbing) Schedule...

    Me: Okay.

Patti: “Okay…?" Where’s the sympathy? Where’s the love?

Me: OMG...Are you okay? Are you warm? Would you like for me to bring you coffee, thermal underwear, blankets???

  • You get all the credit.

An oldie but goodie. Patti's response after I thanked her for coaching me up a 5.8 when I first started climbing.

The Gospel According to Melinda Frances

    The gospel without preamble:

  • It’s just so quiet; it stresses me out.

  • Once the pool opens, I can swim, tan and drink.

  • Kids stress me out; they make too much noise.

  • M: I don't want to be pregnant.

    Me: Okay Jillian Michaels.

    M: Who's Jillian Michaels?

  • I want to be besties with Paris Hilton and Michelle Obama.

  • Whatever happened to being a classy lady?

  • They called me "The Hot Mess Express" in college.

  • M: I want to open a restaurant called "Street Food." I shouldn't have to go to Prague to get a fried cheese sandwich.

Me: You can make your own fried cheese.

M: I can make my own burrito but I still like to go to Qdoba.

  • Melinda: I was supposed to be named Veronica and I think I would have made a good one.

Me: What do you think are the qualities of a Veronica?

    Melinda: Sassy...fun...

  • Me: Is she nuttier than a fruitcake?

    Melinda: Mmmmmm, cake.

The Gospel According to Hazira, The 'Fugee (Special Birthday Edition)

Do not become friends with a refugee if you know what's good for you. Besides the fact that they will make Borat-like pronouncements, the wants and needs of a 'fugee are endless. Despite my admonishment, Hazira is my friend and what follows below is her gospel:

  • You were so furious then you got in touch with your better self...

  • None of my relationships are so easily destroyed.

  • I think when we are spontaneous, we are at our most human.

  • Obama is such an example of positive psychology.

  • I felt safe the moment that I met you but I also sensed that you could be a tough character.

  • You know what energizes me? Nice people energize me...

  • Keepittogetherkeepittogetherkeepittogether.

  • In my country, we don't have to call before stopping over at someone's house.

  • Me: I just have one more thing to do -- get my battery checked out.

Hazira: If you go and get it checked out then you're going to need a new battery.

  • After demonstrating my new self-massage skills...

    Hazira: Tapping. Okay, drumming...

  • I feel so relaxed just watching this show (In Treatment).

  • Nobody gives me credit...

  • Do I get recognition for that?

  • I'm going to reflect on that later.

  • Once you are a refugee, you're always a refugee.

  • Happy Birthday Bosanski Scalawag!

The Gospel According to My Father

My father was a Marine who loved to talk about his Parris Island days. His brother told him that he needed to turn in his badge when he got his hat shot off after responding to a domestic violence situation as a police officer but the turning in of the badge did not happen.

When someone dies, I try hard to remember the things they said. It's funny because the sayings pop into my mind at the unlikeliest of times...

  • Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

My father's typical joshin' around with his buddies.

  • That's not even a dog; I should shoot it.

About Thatch, my brother's Cocker Spaniel. We had Doberman Pinschers when I was growing up...

  • (That's Brutus, one of several Dobermans.)

  • You gotta die somehow.

To one of his associates that was flirting with me.

  • She's the world's oldest teenager.

    My father about his sister.

  • You'd rather eat cake than cornbread?

My father to me. I was the pickiest of eaters but never about sweets.

  • Baseball is interesting if you understand the game.

  • I don't like chicken. We had so much of it when I was growing up.

  • My father: You're a part of me. So, if you go over there, it's like I'm going too.

Me: What if I can't figure it out?

My father: You're smart. I know that you can do it.

    Me: You're spoiled.

    My father: You are too.

My father schmoozing me to go over to my aunt's house and help her figure out a deep fryer. He had promised her, around 7:30 a.m., that he would come and help. It was round 2 p.m. when the schmoozing started. I went to help my aunt and we did figure out how to get the thing going without blowing ourselves up. In the meantime, I was fascinated by how much oil went into the fryer.

  • I hit him so hard that he went back to writing poetry.

My father about a poet that we knew who referred to himself as Hurricane R during their football playing days.

  • Doctor (before knee surgery): Do you exercise?

    My father: I chase women.

  • When your mother and I were courting, we went to a carnival and the Ferris wheel stopped. We were stuck up at the top but I didn't care. I was satisfied just being with her.

  • You're gonna have to start calling me by my first name.

After my father spotted a gray hair in my head. In essence, I was cramping his public persona.

  • This is the best milk that I've ever had. This is the best pineapple that I've ever had.

    My father after major surgery.

  • When I die, I want Dora to sing Danny Boy at my funeral.

  • I hate to tell you this but, if you see a squirrel, don't try to avoid it. You'll end up hitting other people's cars and causing lots of damage.

(My father's advice while teaching me how to drive...)

  • No one else can drive but you. You have to watch out for everyone and yourself too.

  • A look over your shoulder will save your life.

    (More driving advice)

    The Gospel According to Patti

That's Patti a.k.a The Tenacious One over to the left -- lead climbing a route outdoors and what follows below is her gospel.

  • Do your hands ever get sore?, I asked in child-like wonder. My hands get so tender while climbing at times.

Patti turned her hands over and discussed the merits of calluses that have fallen off. Yeah, they get sore but I just don't talk about them because my knees are sore, my back is sore and my elbows are sore. Your problem is that you're not sore enough....

  • If I start it, I'm going to climb it.

Mike and I were trying to figure out the The Skull Cracking route which had a challenging beginning. It looked impossible to start so we called Patti over. Patti is like that Mikey kid in the Life commercials; she'll climb anything and, sure enough, she did. Once the belay was off, Patti said, That one's all about balance.

  • I was attempting to climb Girl Power, a challenging 5.9 route. I had attempted it several times before I concluded that maybe I wasn't tall enough.

    Patti: How tall are you?

    Me: 5'3

    Patti: I think you're taller.

    Me: (Crumpled brow)

Patti: I certainly think I'm taller...

  • The move needs to be deliberate and controlled, more advice from Patti as I tried to ascend Girl Power, a 5.9 route.

  • What happened to muscle memory? Me after trying to get over the arête of Girl Power

Patti: You gave it new memory.

  • You know that part that you always get stuck on? Step on that rock instead, do a drop knee and it'll just shove you up to the top...

Patti's advice after I climbed Pacman Revival, a 5.9 route whose crux continued to baffle me.

  • After not being able to get over the arête of a route...

  • Me: Are you going to show me how to do it?

Patti: Well, I'm going to either show you how to do it or how not to do it.

  • The ladies at work told me that I'm a hypochondriac.

I told them that I'm a conversationalist and I talk about what ails me.

  • Patti: That's like a dangling modifier.

Me: Wow, I haven't heard that in awhile. Anybody see that comma splice? This conversation has really taken a turn for the worst.

Mike: No, it hasn't; we haven't talked about colons yet.

  • Patti: You're doing excellent. It took me a year to climb 5.9's and, if I weren't climbing better than you right now, I'd be disappointed since I've been climbing for three years.

  • If I don't say it enough, it's because I don't say stuff like that. Remind me in nine months and I'll tell you again.

  • Remember, I'm the cool one -- after Patti gave me advice on how to tackle a burly 5.9*

  • I always tell my kids it's all about the attitude.

Patti to me after a series of pep talks about climbing goals, not going against the grain of routes, having fun and not being hard on myself after I mentioned that I had hit the proverbial wall when it came to climbing.

  • Don't be a purist.

  • Patti to me after I struggled with Now That's More Like It, a 5.9 route; I insisted on going left even though I had lots of footholds on the right side. In addition, I didn't want to cheat my way up by using holds that didn't belong to the route.

  • Patti: I'm going to climb this (Now That's More Like It) even though it's hard.

  • Me: :o, That's mean.

Patti: (Chuckling) Are you still surprised about that now?

*Patti acknowledged her coolness after I told her what Gingersnapper wrote...

The Gospel According to My Aunt Al

  • My cousin: Can you put on your glasses and take a look at this...?

My aunt: You need to (drag on cigarette) get out of this house (i.e. go to the hospital).

  • My aunt was flipping channels when she landed on Lord of The Rings which I told her that I had really enjoyed.

    Me: Have you seen Avatar?

My aunt: I don't watch that kind of s*@t.

  • My aunt: Come on, now, work with me...

  • A statement that my aunt makes when she feels someone is being too diplomatic.

  • About my Sunday malaise:

You can't win; you have five days stacked up against two.

  • Mental illness is rough.

A comment that my aunt will typically make in connection to difficult coworkers.

  • Regarding my cousin's possible depression...

She (drag on cigarette) just gonna have to shake it off.

  • On why she will not loan people cigarettes.

If you smoke, you need to have your own cigarettes.

  • You must not know how to hang up.

After I got kidnapped into a rather awkward conversation.

  • How long have you been working? Ain't no end to work.

  • I don't see why they (commentators) are still discussing it; they gave them the points.

On the Green Bay (28) Dallas (0) game (score) right before halftime on Nov. 7th when the Packers intercepted the ball and there was a question about whether the player's knee was down before the ball was swiped.

    The Gospel According to Mike

Note: Mike is one of my belay partners and Patti's husband. I'm kind of jealous because Mike just took Lead Climbing 101 which I want to, eventually, take.

  • After Patti climbed Bristol Crix, a 5.9 route:

If Patti had trouble climbing that route, I'm not going to attempt it; I know who wears the climbing pants in the family.

  • After climbing and before heading out to lunch:

When I'm sitting with Patti, I give fat bald men everywhere hope...

  • On Patti's Delayed Onset of Sarcasm:

Yeah, then she shows up with a sword in one hand and a salt shaker in the other...

  • After Patti tackled Inconceivable, a challenging 5.9 route:

    You're queen of the wall.

  • As Patti and I were leaving: Thanks for driving my wife up the wall. (There were four of us climbing that day so we split off into groups of two.)

  • A Few Days Later:

Me: How long did you and Chris stay after Patti and I left?

Mike: Not long. I only did four routes. I'm lazy, no good and worthless; just ask Patti.

  • Mike's answer to a question posed by Joe:

She's (Patti) not sane; she married me.

  • On why I decided to climb Chag, 5.9/5.8 route.

Me: Patti goaded me into doing it -- but in a nice way.

Mike: Good thing you're not married to her; it wouldn't be in a nice way. We've had 11 good years of marriage but we won't talk about the other 17.

We stayed together for the sake of the children...Neither one of us wanted custody of them.

  • Juanita, a rock climbing newbie: My forearms hurt. I'm taking a break.

Mike to Juanita: Just remember: there is no problem big enough that you can't run away from it.

  • Mike experienced a little post-Pacman Revival (a 5.9 route) elbow pain:

Patti: Do we need more ice packs?

    Mike: We need more youth.

  • Mike to me: Did I ever tell you about my concussion?

    Me: No.

Mike: It didn't effect me at all.

    An hour later...

Mike to me: Did I ever tell you about my concussion? It didn't effect me at all.

Patti put her head down, laughed and walked away.

Mike: You get the girl and the laughter...

  • (Mike belaying for Patti)

  • Patti -- after climbing Chickens Don't Clap, a 5.10a route: I'm going to get a drink of water then throw up.

    Mike: Don't waste the water...

  • Mike: Climbing is like baseball -- there is no clock.

  • Me: Patti's in rarefied air; she's rocking the 5.10's now.

Mike: She's always been a perfect 10 to me...

  • To Mike who was belaying for me: Do you mind if I do laps?

Mike: Now, we wouldn't be friends if we didn't let you abuse yourself...

  • There are two ways to have a successful marriage.

1). Let your wife think she's in control.

2). If number one does not work, let her be in control.

The Gospel According To Juror #612

Jury duty was another reminder to take care of myself. The case centered on a 69-year-old man who, in the words of the defense, had a complicated medical history, smoked more than a pack of cigarettes a day in addition to being a frequent consumer of beer. His last stint in the hospital was for femoral bypass surgery. He had several diagnoses including, peripheral vascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had previously undergone surgery for carotid stenosis.

I spent seven days with people who, before that point, had been total strangers. If I had to be on jury duty, this crew was the one to endure civic duty.

I leave you with some words from the woman who sat next to me in "the box:"

  • I zoom past the produce, Juror #612 informed us as we talked about blueberries and mangoes.

  • She has four or five cans of sweetened condensed milk on standby.

  • Kids make own grocery list and will not be allowed to consume anything purchased that did not appear on said list, including lemon meringue pie made from items on mama's list.

  • Dislikes even one brown spot on bananas and is not crazy about soft apples either.

  • Strawberries are the bomb as long as they're at room temperature.

  • Lunchbox: Spiderman (only one available at the time)

  • Inside of lunch box: small bottle of Tabasco Sauce along with fried chicken et al.

  • Comment of the week: "You apple eaters are getting on my nerves," Juror #612 said as she took care of her Papa John's slice.

  • I don't do alone -- thoughts on Division 12's solitary cell that we walked past on the way down to the courtroom.

  • I'm going to the zoo this weekend just to get a funnel cake; that's it. Going to the zoo and not getting a funnel cake is like going to Six Flags and not getting a turkey leg. It would be like going to Louisiana and not getting crawfish.

  • Just like milk, we all have an expiration date.

  • After we were dismissed from the trial, there was a brief break in the rain as we walked to the parking garage. I told juror #612 that, if it started raining again, we could make a run for it to which she responded, "Now we sat up there and watched you eat Greek yogurt; I'm not running. I don't even run to the bathroom when I have to use it badly."

Another juror, #635, told me that if anyone dies of soda consumption, she might just be the one and she would, happily, go gentle into that good night if soda is the cause...

During our last meal together, I asked Juror #635 if she were an abuser since she told me that her husband had scrambled to cut the grass the previous day when she arrived home early. He thought she was angry because she didn't kiss him before she left. Only, she was running late and, therefore, no time for a parting kiss.

I had my suspicions that #635 might be a nipple-twister à la Carrie in The King of Queens (03:25) but, really, the cross-examining had just gotten to me at this point and I was starting to suspect people of all manner of crimes and I had so many objections that it wasn't even funny.

Farewell fellow jurors and goodbye Citygarden...
